The Immortal Realm

Hey guys, today I’m going to introduce you the Immortal Realm. It’s a fictional place that I created. To avoid spoilers, I won’t share which novel this world is from. If you are new to my site, welcome! You can learn more about me on my about page or check out some of my novels on my works page.

Whether you’re a reader or a writer, you’ve probably noticed that every story you read, be it contemporary or fantasy, contains world building. Of course, fantasy novels will have the most world building because the fantasy world is part of the central theme of the story. For example, J. K. Rowling is one of the best world builders of all time. Her fantasy world in the Harry Potter Series was so realistic that it’s not only been seen in the movies but there are actually theme parks where people can walk around Hogsmeade and see inside Hogwarts. I went to Universal Studios Hollywood recently and am amazed at how realistic everything was!

My world building is obviously nothing compared to the legendary J. K. Rowling, but I have spent a lot of time creating my fictional world and am excited to share some of it with you.

In my novel, one of the characters finds a book that introduces her to the immortal world, so I’ll share a part of that here and then explain a bit more.

To any and all who open this book,

In this book you will find the history of the immortal realm. There are two realms in this world. Our realm is not the only one, another exists. It is called the mortal realm. It is a strange place without magic, without dragons to light our fires or gnomes to care for the gardens. Humans are the only people in this strange realm. There are no vampires or witches, mermaids or shape shifters, no seers or ghosts. How unfortunate is this news. Though they are lucky there are no wendigos or sirens in their realm.

If by some miracle, you who have picked up this book are from this strange mortal land, you will get to learn that you are not the only intellectual being alive. Others exist. You may have seen some of these beings as we have crossed over to your realm from time to time. I will talk more about this later.

So I hope you enjoyed reading that! I had a lot of fun coming up with the different creatures that inhabit the immortal realm.

The dragons were especially my favorite. They are a bit different than the usual terrifying huge beasts that you read about in most books. The dragons of the immortal realm are small and cute, kind of like the picture on this post. They don’t grow beyond the size of a german shepherd. Usually each household has a dragon and like the letter said, they light the fireplaces. Royal families usually have one per room.

One thing that is unique about the immortal realm is the way everyone ages. Up to the age of 18 they age the same way we do: one year at a time. After that is when it gets interesting…to turn 19 someone must wait 18 years, then to turn 20, it takes 19 years. So the older you get, the slower you age.

There is still so much more to share about the Immortal realm, but I will share it in future blog posts.

So far, what do you think of the Immortal Realm? And what is one book that you believe does great at world building? It doesn’t have to be a fantasy book.

    Hi S.K!

    Wonderful blog post !

The way you write is extremely intriguing and you can tell that the Immortal Realm is a fantastic book! Excited to hear more about it!

When it comes to your world building question – I very much agree. Harry Potter is hands down one of the most impressive world building fantasy novels in history. To think someone could DREAM and IMAGINE such a world from scratch. It’s amazing and so impressive. Currently world building myself for my current work in progress. Lots of work but oh is it fun!

    Chat soon! 🙂

      Hi Pam!

Thanks for commenting. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed reading about the immortal realm.

I am not sure if or when we will ever see another world built as realistically as Harry Potter. I am excited for the day another writer will build a world as realistic as that.

Best of luck on your work in progress! Can’t wait to check it out. 🙂

You set the scene well for your concept of the two realms. I’m not one for reading fiction, but a book that painted a picture for me was a nonfiction book could Chaos, which is about chaos theory. Really interesting and eye opening book

      • S. K. Nijjar

Thanks, it took a while to figure out how to explain it in a way that makes sense, but this seems to have worked.

I haven’t read many nonfiction books but Chaos sounds interesting. I’ll be adding it to my to be read list. 🙂

I’ve recently started writing short stories again, after a lengthy hiatus. I really enjoy, and have been told I’m good at creating characters. Creating a “world” is something I’ve not really done, but something I really want to do, especially if I am to write a longer story.

The immortal realm fascinates me, I like the different approach to the dragon and the strange ageing process.

    • S. K. Nijjar

Characters are a central part of any story so it’s great that you’re good at creating characters. World building takes time and you get better with practice.

I’m glad to hear the Immortal Realm interests you! It was fun creating it, and the aging process took me a while to come up with but I wanted to do something unique so I took my time.

Omg!! That’s a great idea. I haven’t read anything like this before. This could be a great world for a book series no doubt!! I’m so interested in your story!!

Oh wow I love this! Creating a world must be taking a lot of time, but what a great achievement!

I’m really intrigued by how the characters age up as that’s not something I’ve read before. I’ll be looking forward to reading more about the Immortal Realm as it sounds absolutely fantastic! Thanks for sharing – great post x

Wow, you really pulled me into your world with your descriptive writing. I love the aging aspect of the characters in your story. Very unique! I also liked the new take on dragons being small. I think you’re onto something great with your version of the Immortal Realm.

I agree about Harry Potter and world building; I visited Universal Studios in Florida and absolutely loved it!

    • S. K. Nijjar

I’m glad the Immortal Realm interests you! It’s funny, I got the idea of the dragons being small from movies actually.

I’ve always thought they looked so cute when they were small and that gave me the idea of creating dragons that just stay at that size.

The aging process took me longer to figure out because I wanted to do something unique. Not just the typical trope that they stop aging altogether.

I have yet to go to the Universal Studios in Florida but it’s definitely on my bucket list of places to go! 🙂

I love the way you write, I love fantasy and this is a book I would like to read. The whole concept of the dragons being small and the way they age is intriguing. I will like to know more from the story in your future blog post. Thank you for sharing

I’ll be honest with you, I’m not really into fantasy stories. However, your story seems very interesting. I def am curious to see how this story unfolds. I absolutely loved the aging aspect – gosh, if that would be our case too haha. Wishing you the best of luck with your story.

    Much love always,

Hi Helen. I’m glad to hear you liked the gnomes! They are funny little creatures. They don’t often interact with people but if they like you, they can be quite chatty. Lol

    • S. K. Nijjar

Thanks Jenn, I’m so glad to hear you want to read this book! It’s not published yet and I don’t want to reveal the title yet because my main character doesn’t find out she’s from the Immortal Realm until about the middle of the story so it would spoil it, but I will be posting updates to my blog when I get closer to publishing. Right now looking for a literary agent.

  • Kaci

    I love this post!

Any book with dragons is already in with me.
I love the way that you changed their “normal” appearance and made them smaller and cute. The way people age after hitting 18 is also very interesting.
Really great post all around. It seems like you’ve put a lot of time and effort into building a really wonderful world.
    Thank you for sharing this.

    • S. K. Nijjar

Hi Kaci, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed reading about the Immortal Realm. It’s been fun coming up with different ways to make the world unique. I will be sharing more about the Immortal Realm in future blog posts, so be sure to look out for those. 😊

  • Manisha

I am so excited to read about tiny dragons! Dragon books are the best! I also like how you explained the ageing process. I think having a book in your book that explains the world to the characters as well as the readers is an excellent touch! Speaking of dragons, I thought Christopher Paolini did a great job creating the world of Alagaësia in his books.
    Can’t wait to read more!

    • S. K. Nijjar

Thanks Manisha, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed reading about the Immortal Realm! I felt like finding the book was good for the character so she could learn about the world on her own instead of hearing about it from other people. 😊
