Shapeshifters of the Immortal Realm
Hey guys! This week I’m excited to share with you about the shapeshifters of the Immortal Realm. If you’re new to my site, welcome! I’m glad you found your way here. I’ve always loved reading about werewolves and other types of shifters so it was fun coming up with the shapeshifters.
There are three types of shapeshifters in the Immortal Realm: animals, humans, and unique beasts. Before I get into the details though, here’s the list of blog posts about the Immortal Realm so if you missed one or want to review, check it out.

Animal Shapeshifters
The first type of shapeshifter is the animal shifter. As the name implies, they shift into animals. Each shapeshifter has one unique animal that they shift into. There are fierce animals like wolves, bears, tigers, etc. But there are also the unfortunate ones who shift into skunks, snakes, bugs, or worms.
As you can see that would be a problem. Imagine you shift into an ant and your brother steps on you! That would be painful without a doubt. But since they’re immortals, this won’t kill them. It will however take a few months to wake up while your bones grow back. Like I said…painful.
Now at this point, you must be wondering, if someone knows they shift into a bug or something else unhelpful, why shift at all, right? Well, every shifter has a trigger that causes the shift. For some it’s anger, for others it’s grief, it depends on the person what their trigger is. A friend of mine is a shifter and his trigger is danger. When he feels there is danger nearby, he shifts. You’ll meet him in one of my novels one day soon.
Human Shapeshifters
The second type of shifter is a human shapeshifter. This probably doesn’t make sense at first because they’re human to begin with so what are they shifting into?
Other humans! So let me explain with an example.
Imagine you’re a human shapeshifter from the Immortal Realm and your trigger is fear. So whenever you’re afraid, you disappear for a few seconds and then anyone who sees you after that will not see you, but rather in your place, they’ll see a completely different person. You will stay this way until you are no longer afraid.
Pretty cool, right? Imagine how useful that can be if you’re trying to evade people. You could walk right past the people looking for you and they wouldn’t recognize you.
My favorite part about human shapeshifters though…a few of them have the ability to change someone else’s appearance as well. So long as they’re holding their hand. Even if the other person is not a shapeshifter. This ability is very rare, only seen in the most powerful human shifters.
Unique Beasts
The third type of shapeshifter is the one that shifts into a beast nobody has ever seen before. Some shift into mythical creatures we hear about like griffins, pegasus or centaur. Others will shift into humanoid beings that may have skin like a snake or claws like a cat.
For example, there is a shapeshifter that changes into a beast with skin made of gold that can shoot flaming hot liquid gold at people.
Unique Powers
Every immortal being in the Immortal Realm has one enhancement: Witches—hearing, vampires—strength. For shifters, it’s speed. They are faster than any other immortal being even in their human form. Although same as with the vampires, their full speed doesn’t kick in until they turn eighteen. They start gaining speed at puberty but don’t reach their full potential until their eighteenth birthday.
Shapeshifters also have special powers. Some have healing capabilities, others can communicate with their shifting animal, meaning a wolf shifter can communicate with other wolves. And not just in his/her wolf form but while human too. Some can read minds as well, although this is very rare. Mind readers don’t usually broadcast their ability either because people tend to feel uncomfortable around them otherwise.

Such an interesting topic, and a very rich world. I try to imagine what these shapeshifters will look like from your description. I find the unique beasts most interesting.

Unwanted Life
Shapeshifting against your will could have a lot of issues if you had PTSD or anxiety, or even depression. Also, what would happen if you shifted to an animal when you were giving birth or it happened during sex?

Maybe I should have clarified. The shifting doesn’t start until the immortal turns 18 and until then they spend their whole lives preparing for their life as a shapeshifter. This means they are very good at controlling their emotions. The more they age the better control they have over their shifts and by the time they turn 20, eighty-five percent of immortals are able to control the shift.

Shapeshifters are always fascinating, I always prefer the ones that turn to animals myself. I kind of like the idea of turning into a wolf and wandering through the forest.

I have always being fascinated by shapeshifters since I watched Mystique from X-Men. She can turn into anyone she wants to and alter her voice. Sounds just like your description of human shapeshifter but without fear.

Great post, if I could choose to be a shapeshifter I would probably choose to shapeshift into an animal, although I’d love to have the choice to turn into a bird so I can fly around and see the world!

I love that there’s a trigger to change into their other form. Super creative.
Shapeshifters have always been super interesting to me. It would be so cool to have that power! It’s always been hard for me to pick my shifted form though. I’d like to be a wolf or even a mythical creature.
